Sometimes called "Doctor," he was studying medicine when the Civil War began. He joined Company F, 2nd Virginia, Stonewall Brigade, and lost his arm at 1st Manassas. After his recovery, he served on General Jackson's staff. After the war, he took up teaching, and served as headmaster at a school in Berryville.
