Annette Adams Duke
Fort Valley , GA- Annette Adams Duke, 92, passed away on Friday, November 18, 2016. A Celebration of her Life will be held at the Fort Valley United Methodist Church on Wednesday, November 23, at 1:00 p.m., followed by a reception and visitation in the church Fellowship Hall. The Reverends Jim Hamlin and Doug Mays will officiate.
Annette was born in Fort Valley, GA to the late Violet Henry Pierce and Eston Buchanan Adams on September 11, 1924. She was a senior at Fort Valley High School on December 7, 1941 when Pearl Harbor was attacked. After graduation she attended Andrew College. She was a loving wife and homemaker as well as a very active volunteer at her church and in the community. A lifelong member of the Fort Valley Baptist Church, she was a part of the Lydia Sunday School class, teacher of the four-year old children's class for many years and the founder of the church's senior citizen group, "The 39ers". Annette spent many hours planning events, parties and field trips for this group which began small but grew into a much larger group of friends from other churches in Fort Valley. She loved planning the yearly bus trip for the "39ers" attending to every detail to ensure a fun and memorable experience for everyone. She sought ways to honor members for their service and example of Christian love. She was an active member of the Town and Country Garden Club. After recovering from polio she was very active in the March of Dimes. Known as "Miss Annette", she was a Cub Scout Den Leader and a Leader for both of her daughter's Girl Scout Troops. She was a trainer and encourager of new troop leaders. She continued her love of scouting by supporting her grandchildren in their scouting adventures and their completion of Boy and Girl Scout's highest honors.
Annette served her Lord and Savior by serving other people, reminding everyone that "Jesus loves you and so do I". She faithfully attended Indian Springs Camp Meeting every year creating a warm welcome for family and friends.
Annette is preceded in death by her beloved grandparents, John and Louella Adams of Fort Valley, her late parents, Violet Pierce of East Point, GA and Buck and Julia Adams of Fort Valley, her husband, Victor Leroy Duke of Fort Valley, an Army Air Corp pilot killed in WWII and her husband of 60 years, James Victor Duke of Fort Valley. Annette and Jimmie are survived by their children; Vicky Duke Bridges, son-in-law Tom, of Perry, GA, James Buchanan Duke , daughter-in-law
Jane, of Jacksonville, FL, Karen Duke Neuner, son-in-law Don, of Fayetteville, GA, and Linda Connell, son-in-law Bob of Fort Valley. The joys of her life were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Tracy Duke Martin (Marty) of Fort Valley, Christie Connell McDaniel of Kathleen, GA, Ashley Annette Adams Nechay (Evgeni) of Newnan, GA, Amy Adams Dean (Stephen) of Tallahassee, FL and James Fitzpatrick Neuner, a student at George Washington University. Her great-grandchildren are Wesley James Dean, Evan Wesley Self, Gracie Annette Martin, Stevi Addison Martin, Hunter Scott McDaniel and Julia Rebecca Dean.
Annette's family would like to express their deep appreciation to the staffs of Summerhill in Perry, Summers Landing in Warner Robins and The Oaks Nursing Home in Marshallville for their loving care of their mother.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are respectfully requested for the First Baptist Church of Fort Valley or the Fort Valley United Methodist Church. Tomlinson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements
