John Edward Columbus Bean was the son of John Richard Bean, 1730-1789 and Francis Ann, " Richards", Bean, 1737-1790. John was born in Beantown, Charles County, Maryland. He married Clotilda Vincent in 1787. In 1798 they moved to Bardstown, Nelson County, Kentucky with their five children and seven slaves. Three more children were born in Bardstown.

John returned to Maryland to pick up their remaining furniture and personal property. On his return trip to Kentucky while traveling the Cumberland Gap Wilderness Road, his party was attacked and he was killed by Indians. He was buried along the Cumberland Gap Wilderness Road in Claiborne County, Tennessee.
