Al worked as a kiln burner for Medusa Portland Cement Company in Sylvania for nearly 40 years, retiring in 1979. His employment was interrupted by service in the U.S. Army during World War II. Al was a medic, Third Grade Technician, with the Medical Detachment of the 126 Infantry. He served in the South Philippines, East Indies, Papuan and New Guinea. He received a Silver Star and a Purple Heart for injuries received in New Guinea. Despite being seriously injured, he stopped to help men whom he believed were more seriously injured than himself.
Al was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years; his parents; sons, Albert Jr. and Robert; brothers, Lawrence, Norman, Robert and Donald; and sisters, Mildred Simon and Dorothy Harrison. He is survived by daughter Donna (Richard) Lunsford, sons, Dale (Terri) and Dennis (Kaye); grandhildren Dawn and Crysta Lunsford, Robert (Victoria), Brian (Leslie), Allen (Farlene), Eric (Kristina), Timothy (Jennifer) Burghardt, Stacie (Scott) King, Jody (John) Brown, Kimberly Soinski and Joanna (Arte) Heudecker; 17 great grandchildren; brothers, Ernest "Bill" and Russell (Nanci) Burghardt, and sisters Helen Armstrong and Pauling (Don) Wallace.
