Rhea Geneal Bond, 92, of Robinson, IL, died at 1:40 p.m. on Sunday, November 19, 2017 at Casey Health Care Center in Casey, IL.

She was born February 13, 1925 at home in Licking Township, Crawford County, IL, the daughter of Boyd Elias Gower & Imo Chloe (Stifle) Gower, both of whom preceded her in death.

She married Leo Bond on June 30, 1945 and he preceded her in death on February 23, 2006. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Earl Eugene Gower and Donald Dean Gower; and by her twin sister, Reba Genevise Hoke.

She is survived by four children, Janice Jean Bond (Robinson, IL), Norma Lee & David Allen Barnes (Evansville, IN), Rodney E. & Mary Lugene Bond (Robinson, IL), and Julie Kay Bond & Royal Lliane Johnson (Davis City, IA); by three grandchildren, Katrina & Kent Starnes (Evansville, IN), Miranda & Glynn Smith (Peasedown St John, England), and Isaac & Jessica Bond (Olathe, KS); by her great-grandchildren, Keira Savannah Starnes, Keegan Samuel Starnes, Konnor David Starnes, and Kyron Everett Starnes; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Rhea grew up in the Annapolis, IL, area and was a graduate of Annapolis Grade School. She displayed a strong work ethic throughout her life. She worked as a nanny and housekeeper for the John Rooney family (owners of Rooney’s Grocery Store in Robinson) from the fall of 1939 until her graduation from Robinson Township High School in 1943. While WWII was still in full swing, she went to work at Republic Aviation in Evansville, IN as a riveter from 1943 until the end of the war in 1945, when production was shut down for the P-47 Thunderbolt. Rhea took several years following to raise her children, before being hired to cook at New Hebron Grade School from 1965 until 1973. She then took on the role of manager and head cook of the Nuttall Middle School cafeteria from it’s opening in the fall of 1973 to the end of the school year in 1988.

Her retirement years were often spent in the garden where she and Leo spent countless hours tending to their vegetables, flowers, and fruit. She was well-known in the area for her strawberries, and sold them for years. She was, by all accounts, an expert in the kitchen, and wasn’t afraid to experiment until the recipe was just right. Needless to say, no one ever left her dinner table unsatisfied.

Early in their marriage, she and Leo attended Bible Chapel Church with their young family. They went on to become longtime members of the Robinson First Baptist Church, where they were both active, Rhea participating in Bible school and various other programs. She was also very active in the Homemaker’s Extension in the 1950’s.

Rhea was a strong, but gentle spirit, who filled the world around her with love. She was the very heart of her family, who will forever cherish her memory.

A time of visitation will be held from 12:00-2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 25th at the Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home, with burial following in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Pastor Tom Akers will officiate the service.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, the American Cancer Society, or to the “NOW Program”, a program that sends supplemental food home on weekends with a number of students in the Robinson School District.
