Stanley W. Agler, 84, died at Community Health Professionals Inpatient Hospice Center in Van Wert on Nov. 19, 2017.
He was born to William B. Agler and Bernice O. (Gamble) at home in Van Wert on March 3, 1933.
Agler is survived by a daughter, Linda Agler Evans (Tucson and Van Wert), granddaughter, Christina Evans (Daniel) Abram, and two greats, Mirabella and Xander (Nashville, Tennessee) and a son, Daniel W. Agler (girl friend Hannah Culver)(Pontiac, Michigan).
The first full-time mayor of Van Wert, (three terms), Agler spent over 47 years in local government and on City Council beginning in 1968 serving the people he loved.
Agler was president of Van Wert Rotary Int., song leader, and a Paul Harris Fellow and Noble Grand of the I.O.O.F. lodge. First President of the Parks Board, Agler later created the first Parks and Recreation Department in Van Wert.
A known orator, he shared information with neighboring cities in Ohio and northeast Indiana on economic development before there was a name for it. One of his greatest joys was attending the Ohio Municipal League. "At the time I was mayor was the best time of all. We didn't have so many state regulations. It was fun. I was very lucky."
Stan was a 51-year member at Wesley Methodist, Van Wert, and directed the choir and Easter and Christmas cantatas over 14 years. He sang in the choir at First United Methodist Church. Stan was a natural impromptu performer at any gathering. His leadership, creativity, and humor will be, missed by all who loved him.
