Enlisted 9/21/62. Was in hospital since mustering in. Was sent to hospital at Shelbyville 4/20/63 as a result of wounds. Wounded at Murfreesboro 12/31/62. Pension #11759 applied for on 1/20/1910 in DeKalb Co. Application
rejected. Born in DeKalb Co. in 1844. Was wounded in joint of left elbow. Furloughed and remained at home and was not able to go back. States he took the Oath in 1864 "to save my life from a drunken mob of yanks". Had 10 children. Wife had been dead for 16 years at time of application. Name appeared as taking the Oath on 1/8/65 in Nashville. (they are referring to other John Atnip). Probably rejected for a clerical mistake. Buried in the Indian Mound Cemetery in DeKalb County,
11/25/1844 - 8/31/1921
His wife Amey is also buried there, 2/20/1847 - 1/31/1894.
