Marlene Kay Christensen, oldest daughter of Walter and Gladys (Stewart) Maassen was born August 18, 1941 in Atlantic, Iowa. She attended Marne School and graduated from Walnut High School with the class of 1959. She went on to get her nursing degree at Mercy Hospital of Nursing, where she graduated in 1962.
On September 14, 1963, Marlene was united in marriage to Duane Christensen. They became parents to two children, Craig and Michelle. She enjoyed following them in their activities of 4H, FFA, horse shows, car racing, and tractor pulls. She and Duane also enjoyed attending antique tractor shows and spending time with family and friends.
She worked at Myrtue Hospital, Dr. Jos. H. Spearing for 22 years and Elm Crest for 20 years. She was also a Hospice Volunteer and did volunteer work at the Harlan Senior Center.
Marlene died on Friday, November 17, 2017 surrounded by her family at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, attaining the age of seventy-six years, two months, and thirty days. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Sheryl Madsen.
She is survived by her husband Duane of Harlan, Iowa; son Craig Christensen and his wife Holly of Harlan, Iowa; daughter Michelle Selken of Conrad, Iowa; grandchildren Seth Selken of Clemson, South Carolina; Melanie Selken of Conrad, Iowa; Carly Christensen of Harlan, Iowa; sister Nancy and her husband Keith Madsen of Elk Horn, Iowa; other family members and many friends.
