Barbara Greer Self (September 2, 1934 - November 9, 2017), born and raised in Cincinnati, a forty-year resident of Terrace Park, and most recently a happy member of the Deupree House community, passed away on Thursday after a brief illness surrounded by her loving family.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Lyman Greer and Elizabeth Millard Greer; her sister, Diana Craighead Greer; and her son, David Lyman Self.
She is survived by her children, Janet Ashley Self (John M. McHugh), Elizabeth Millard Smolin (Jerome H. Smolin), Alexander Burroughs Self (Kelly H. Self); her grandchildren, Alison Reeta Smolin (Thomas J. Cogswell), Brian Stephen Smolin, Sarah Joiner McHugh, William Kelly Self; and her great-granddaughter, Josephine Emma Cogswell.
Barbara graduated from Hillsdale High School and attended Smith College (Northampton, MA). While raising four children, she attended Highlands University (Las Vegas, NM) and completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in History at West Texas State University (Canyon, TX).
Upon returning to her Cincinnati home in the mid-1970s, Barbara was active as a volunteer at several community organizations. Barbara was a voracious reader and a competitive bridge player, and she especially loved spending her summers at the family cottage built in 1895 by her great-grandfather on the shore of Lake Michigan.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 15th, at 3:00 PM, in the Club Room at the Deupree House (3939 Erie Avenue, Cincinnati, 45208).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be given to the Library Foundation of Cincinnati and Hamilton County (88 Vine Street, Cincinnati, OH 45202) (http://foundation.cincinnatilibrary.org), or the Lyman House Memorial Museum (276 Haili Street, Hilo, Hawai'i 96720) (http://lymanmuseum.org).
