A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the overstated age of eighteen in Chambersburg August 4, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 11 as a private with Co. G, 126th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 20, 1863.
