On Saturday, November 11, 2017, our sweet, kind, feisty, red-headed mother and grandmother lost her battle with life and passed away. She was surrounded by those who love her most, her children and grandchildren when she passed.
Rose Marie Hardy Gomm, 86, “Rose or Rosie” to many, died Saturday early morning at the Barrington Place Memory Care facility after suffering from Dementia.
Rose Marie was born August 23, 1931, in Albany, New York, the daughter of Jared Harrison Hardy and LaVina Johnson Hardy. She was the fourth child of a ten children family. She is survived by one brother, Merrill “Merl” Hardy (Judy Hardy - Washington Terrace), four children: Cathie Olmstead (Wayne - CA), Pam Gomm (Roy, UT), Craig Gomm (Teri - Clinton, UT), and Scott Gomm (Stacie - Providence, UT). Rose also had 12 grandchildren and 5 step-grandchildren and 46 great grandchildren. She left her legacy of love to her posterity and she will be missed greatly by them.
On November 29, 1947, Rose Marie married her eternal companion, Charles (Chuck) Hood Gomm at the tender age of 16. Later, they were sealed in the Logan LDS Temple on April 29, 1964. Rose and Chuck were married 54 years until Chuck passed away in 2001. The two of them were devoted companions who spent lots of time together hunting, camping, and archery shooting and enjoying their family. When they were younger, they were the perfect dance couple who enjoyed entertaining their friends by dancing the “jitter bug” and other dances of the era. They even surprised their friends and family by doing the Lindy Swing dance at their 50th wedding anniversary.
Hard work was no stranger to Rose. She worked many jobs in her life to help provide for her family. The last job Rosie had was at Hill Air force Base in Ogden, Utah. She was a civilian contractor who worked as an intake specialist shipping and handling packages for the base. She retired from that position when she was 65.
Cooking was among Rose Marie’s favorite personal hobbies. After retirement, she spent hours searching for recipes she wanted to try. Every day of her married life, she got up early and fixed breakfast for Chuck. Even if she didn’t have to get up, she did. She wanted to make sure her husband was fed before he started his day. When visitors came to her home, her first question was always, “Will you be here for dinner”? She loved cooking for her family and anyone who visited her home.
Rose always welcomed visitors to her home. She enjoyed having grandchildren visit from college, grandkid’s friends were also welcome to visit or spend the night. She was a great hostess and often boasted that she knew her grandchildren’s friends better than anyone because they had been so often to stay at her house. “Grandma Gomm” as she became known to everyone, was a popular figure with the grandkids and friends. Service to others was important to her. She was known to surprise visitors with a yummy homemade Orange Julius or her special tuna cheese sandwich.
Determination is a word that describes Rose. She had amazing common sense and an “IRON WILL” that allowed her to accomplish many personal goals which included education, a happy, welcoming home, and a family that felt her presence and love.
In her life, Rosie honed her skills as a kind, loving, generous woman who liked to tell visitors about her life full of happy memories and untold before stories. She is greatly loved by everyone she knows and will be missed so much.
