McCALL — Phillip Weston Vance, 48, of McCall, died Friday, Sept. 14, 1990, in a Boise hospital after a heroic battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m., "High Noon," Monday, Sept. 17, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, off Highway 55 and Farm-to-Market Road, McCall. Bishop Douglas Burnett will officiate. Burial will be in the Finnish Cemetery, off Farm-to-Market Road. Arrangements are under direction of the Heikkila Funeral Chapel, McCall.
Mr. Vance was born April 7, 1942, at Richfield, Sevier County, Utah, a son of Morris and Maurine Vance. He attended elementary schools in Salt Lake City, and graduated from Highland High School. He also attended the University of Utah, and was a 1967 graduate of Utah State University with a bachelor of science degree in forestry and range management.
He and his wife Jean, and family lived in Hyrum, Utah, Evanston, Wyo., Pinedale, Wyo., Sedona, Ariz., and Council, Idaho —spending the last 10 years in McCall. He worked 23 years for the U.S. Forest Service on the Wasatch, Bridger-Teton, Coconino and Payette National Forests. He served as range conservationist, resource forester, assistant forest planner, forest planner, and minerals and special use administrator. The past four years he functioned as ski ranger over the Brundage Mountain Ski Area.
He was a fire fighter for most of his Forest Service career, and for the past several years he was selected for the Great Basin regional fire team as logistics officer. He fought fires throughout the West. For three years, he taught bi-annual courses in minerals management at the National Training Center in Marana, Ariz.
He belonged to his family singing group, Sunshine and 7-Up; was appointed to the jail advisory board for Valley County; and was a past member of the McCall Chamber of Commerce.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many different positions including the Weiser Stake High Council, branch president of the Council branch, first councilor in the Bishopric in Pinedale, Wyo., and Sunday school president in McCall.
The mountains of the West gave pleasure to him. He loved children, animals, country music, high mountain lakes, and laughing with friends. Although he loved hunting and fishing, his greatest joy came from being with his family. His wife, children, mother, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and parents-in-law will miss him very much. We love you!
Survivors include his wife, Jean; and five children, Tyler (22), Jeffrey (20), Kimberly (16), Scott (12), and Pamela (9); his mother, Maurine Nebeker Vance of Bountiful, Utah; sisters, Maylynne Neeley and Julie Jensen, both of Bountiful; and brothers, Ronald of Salt Lake City and Stephen of Missoula, Mont. He was preceded in death by his father, Morris Reed Vance.

Memorials may be made to the Vance Children College Memorial Fund at West One Bank, McCall 83638.

Friends may call today from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Heikkila Funeral Chapel in McCall, and Monday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
