The son of William and Rose (Phinney) Grosvenor, he lived most of his life in Newport. He was married to the former Anita Strawbridge, who survived him two years. Their children Robert Grosvenor, Anita McAndrews & Rose Ryan survived him, as did a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren and one sister, Rose Gardner.
He attended Harvard but interrupted his studies to serve in the Naval Air Force during the First World War. He served in England, patrolling the North Sea. After the War he returned to Harvard to graduate. He returned to the Naval Air Force during the Second World War, serving in the Pacific as an instructor, earning the rank of Commander.
He was President of Grosvenordale Mills in Grosvenordale, Connecticut until he sold it and joined the stock firm of Auchincloss, Redpath and Parker, from which he eventually retired. He was also a founder of the Boys and Girls Clubs in Newport County.
