Virginia Marie (Hillerman) Amend was born in Los Angeles, CA on January 6, 1938. She passed away in Oklahoma City, OK on November 9, 2017. She was raised in Shawnee, OK and graduated from St. Benedict's High School in 1956. Upon graduation, she immediately entered the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1959. She worked at Mercy Hospital until she met and married her husband, 1st Lt. William B. Amend, on September 22, 1962. They were married in Our Lady's Cathedral in Oklahoma City, OK. While raising children and moving around the country, to include three years in Stuttgart, Germany, she continued her nursing profession. She worked in hospitals in Lawton, OK and Leavenworth, KS. She worked as a nursing supervisor in a nursing home in Fairfax, VA. During her time at Colorado Springs, she was involved in the Girl Scout program and was the head of the Officer's Wives Club for the 1st Battalion, 19th Field Artillery. Always a giving person, Ginny was there for those who needed her confidence and support. She was one of the world's great listeners. When she had the opportunity at times to be a "stay at home mom" she not only raised two girls and two boys, she gave of herself tirelessly in numerous projects. During her husband's assignment to Headquarters, VII U.S. Army Corps in Germany, she worked as a dental assistant, was involved with the Dependent Youth Activity organization, was a monitor and volunteer for day care center programs, school bus for small children, and social activities. As recognition of her involvement in such activities, Ginny was awarded the "Helping Hand Award" by the VII U.S. Army Corps Commanding General. This award had been presented on only four previous occasions. Upon her husband's retirement from the U.S. Army in June of 1980, Ginny returned to nursing. She worked for Dr. Allan Metz for eight years and the medical/surgical ward of Mercy Hospital for five years. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Edmond, OK, before moving to St Anne's Retirement with Bill in 2012. Holidays in her home were very special days because she wanted them to be wonderful family occasions, and they always were. Most of all she loved her family and gave them the greatest care and comfort. The door to her home was always open to friends and family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, William Baron Amend, her father, Leo G. Hillerman, her mother, Buena Marie (Dustman) Hillerman, her brother, Eugene Patrick Hillerman, and her stillborn son, Leo Baron Amend. Ginny is survived by her brother Gerald Hillerman; daughters, Charlotte Renee Hinckle and son-in-law, Mark Hinckle, and Angela Denise Schneider; and sons, Edward Baron Amend and Steven Howard Amend and daughter-in-law, Nicole (Stangle) Amend. She is also survived by five grandchildren, James Lee Baron Schneider, Virginia Louise Schneider, Caleb Baron Amend, and by marriage, Christopher Hinckle, Nathan Hinckle and their families, along with numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be Wednesday, November 15, 10:00am at Mercer-Adams Chapel, 3925 N. Asbury, Bethany. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
