Inscription

"COMMEMORATIVE Elias J. Dayton.
Son of Gen. Jonathan Dayton.
Was born in Elizabethtown, New Jersey Jan. 12, 1780.
Died here Oct. 2, 1824.....
For the protection of the people of Delaware this monument is commended.
Mourned by a widow Mother and Sister....
No friend's complaint, no kind domestic tear.
Pleas'd thy pale ghost, or grac'd thy mournful bier.
By foreign hands thy dying eyes were clos'd,
By foreign hands thy decent limbs compos'd,
By foreign hands thy humble grave adorn'd,
By strangers honour'd, and by strangers mourn'd!

The 5th stanza of Alexander Popes; "Elegy to the Memory of an Unfortunate Lady", written in 1717.
