MILLIKEN, Joyce Hayward Holsclaw
Feb. 6, 1923 - May 10, 2012

The family of this amazing woman sadly announces her peaceful passing at noon on May 10, 2012, in Philadelphia, PA, of complications from a stroke. Known to many in Sacramento as their "beloved" teacher of history and English at Mira Loma High School, Joyce had a multitude of friends, associates, and admirers during her 35 years of association with the San Juan Unified School District. Originally married to John L. Milliken, who was the father of her three children, Joyce remarried to Robert C. Hayward, whom she met while teaching, and spent 13 wonderful years with Bob prior to his passing in 1984. Following that, she later remarried again to a close friend of Bob, and a retired General, Fritz Holsclaw. During these years, after retirement, Joyce continued to travel all over the world, with 'her' General, which was her greatest joy. Finally leaving Sacramento in 1994, she relocated to Santa Barbara, California, to be with her children. During this time, she astounded the family by self-publishing a book of vignettes, "I Flunked Santa Claus," which is full of insights and stories about her 35 years of teaching, her children, her youth during the depression, her post war life in occupied Japan, and many other aspects of her life. It was actively marketed by Elderberry Press and resulted in many radio interviews all around the country, which delighted her no end. At age 84, and always having missed "the East coast," Joyce moved to Philadelphia to be near her beloved sister, Margaret Gillmore. She passed away at 89 years old, as elegantly and boldly as she lived. Joyce is survived by her daughter, April Milliken, two sons, John and Tom Milliken and her two grandsons, Ian Ronalds and Pierce Milliken.
