" Thomas McCoy, one of the oldest residents of Keokuk, counting the number of years of his life, died at the home of his son, W. A. McCoy, at 1129 Concert street, at 12:30 o'clock, Saturday afternoon, at the age of 87 years.
Mr. McCoy was a native of Indiana, in which state he was born, December 23, 1825. He came west early in life, and settled at Clayton, Illinois, where he spent most of his days.
Three years ago last July, his wife died at Clayton, and soon afterwards, being left alone, he concluded to leave the homestead, and spend his remaining days with his children. He lived two years with a daughter in Oklahoma. Last June he came up to Keokuk, and took up his residence with his son, where he died.
He has been complaining during the past year, and became quite feeble from age, but at no time was constantly confined to his bed, and only Friday, he was up and about the house. His death, however, was not unexpected, and he passed peacefully away to his reward.
Being here only a short time and being enfeebled by the weight of years, he formed no general acquaintances in Keokuk. He was a member of the Christian church at Columbus City, Iowa, where he has a brother residing.
He bore his affliction with the faith and fortitude of a Christian, and those who knew him had much respect for the venerable father, who had gone far beyond the four score mark.
He is survived by one daughter, and one son: Mrs. John W. Richardson of Hedrick, Oklahoma; and W. A. McCoy; and two brothers: F. M. McCoy of Columbus City, Iowa, and Joseph McCoy of Parsons, Kansas.
The remains will be borne to Clayton Illinois, his old home, to be laid to rest beside the grave of his wife. "
