He came to the United States with his parents when he was 4 years old, and they settled near Hollowayville, Illinois, in Bureau County near Princeton. He was educated in the public schools and confirmed in the German Lutheran Church. He had been a resident of Walnut Township for 53 years.
His naturalization papers are at the Bureau County, Illinois courthouse, dated November 3, 1888. He died October 17, 1931, at age 67 and is buried at Walnut Cemetery, Walnut, Illinois.
