Joseph was the son of Charles Anderson and Elizabeth Wooley, who married on 17 Jun 1845 in Marion Co., Ohio. I found six children for the couple—Loretta (21 May 1846 – 11 Jul 1911), Rolllin W. (4 Jun 1849 – 25 Jan 1923), Joseph Allen (22 Mar 1854 – 16 Apr 1920), Sarah (26 Jun 1857 – 26 Dec 1928), Emma Jane (1 Apr 1860 – 11 Jul 1946), and Charles Jr. (26 Jul 1864 – 19 Mar 1946).

I found Joseph’s parents and two older siblings on the 1850 Census, living in Royal Center, Boon Township, Cass Co., Indiana. Charles Anderson, aged 27, was earning a living as a blacksmith, a trade he eventually passed on to son Rollin. Elizabeth, aged 22, is home with their two young children—Loretta, aged 4, and 1-year-old Rollin. Joseph would join the family four years later.

When the 1860 Census takers hit the streets with their oversized notebooks, he or she found Joseph’s family behind the same door as before in Cass County, Indiana, the nearest post office in Logansport. Charles Anderson, aged 38, was still plying his blacksmith skills. Elizabeth, aged 32, was busy tending to the operation of their home, which by then included five children—Loretta, aged 14, Rollin, aged 11, Joseph, aged 5, Sarah, aged 3, and Emily, aged 9 months.

The 1870 Census still had them in Royal Center in Cass County. Charles Anderson, aged 48, had become a dry goods merchant. Elizabeth, aged 43, was keeping house. All five of their children were still living at home with their parents—Loretta, aged 24, Joseph, aged 15, Sarah, aged 13, Emma, aged 11, and Charles, aged 6.

Sadly, eight years after that census, the family lost wife and mother Elizabeth on 6 Oct 1878, aged 51.

Charles appeared without his helpmate and companion on the 1880 Census, was still living in Royal Center. Charles Anderson, widowed, aged 58, was noted as a grain dealer. Joseph, his name so hard to read that the transcriber came up with Dasek, aged 25, was noted as a restauranteur. Also still home with his father was Joseph’s brother Charles Jr., aged 16.

Three years after that census, Joseph married Alice Jane Rhodes on 14 Feb 1883 in Pulaski Co., Indiana. Three years later, the couple welcomed their only child, son Rea Wallace on 6 Aug 1886.

The three of them appeared together on the 1900 Census, living on N. Michigan St. in Plymouth. Joseph Anderson, aged 46, was “traveling for oil st.” (?) Alice, aged 37, reported that she had only had one child, son Rea (Ray on the record), aged 15 by then.

The 1910 Census placed the family at 813 N. Michigan St. in Plymouth. Joseph, aged 55, was noted as a commercial traveler for a brewery. Alice, aged 46, again reported having had one child, a child still living, though son Rea was no longer at home with his parents. There is a marriage record for a Rea Wallace Anderson to Margaret Shepherd on 17 Aug 1910. Rea married for a second time on 11 Oct 1916, wedding Ruth L. Covey in St. Joseph, Berrien Co., Michigan.

Joseph and Alice were still at their Michigan St. address in 1920. Joseph, aged 65 (54 on the record), was noted as a cigar manufacturer, working out of his home. Alice, aged 57 (52 on the record), was keeping house.

A little over three months later, a dark cloud appeared over this family. The first casualty was Joseph, who succumbed to a stroke on 16 Apr 1920. Alice followed him into the light two years later on 14 Nov 1922, her death attributed to “sclerosis of the spinal cord”. And six years later, the grim reaper came for son Rea, victim of an automobile accident on 8 Mar 1928. He was only 41 years old.
