Son of Peter Poythress and Elizabeth West (Poindexter) Batte. He enlisted on 19 Apr 1861 as a Corporal in Co. E, 12th Virginia Infantry, later promoted to Full Sergeant. He died of wounds in the Battle of Chancellorsville, and was interred in his family's square 13 May 1863. (Information from original cemetery register and military records)
