Born in Sedgwick, Hancock County, Maine, he was he son of Hugh or Hughey Page and wife Elizabeth Carter and a twin to John Lowell Page per suggested edit.

He was married in 1864 when he enlisted in Sedgwick and served in Co K, 16th Reg Maine Volunteers. He would have been 20 yrs old but enlistment gives ae 18. I believe the first wife was Mary Thompson whom he married at age 18 in 1864 and had a son Albert. (Marriage reported Ellsworth Herald reported October 21, 1864, Rufus E. Page of Sedwich to Miss Mary E. Thompson.)

He was discharged June 15, 1865. His military record includes a remard that he was sentenced for desertion and apparently had been admitted to a hopsital at City Point Virginia September 18, 1864.Transferred to the 20th Maine Co G June 5, 1865 and mustered out July 11, 1865. I presume that to mean he was charged with desertion but then found in a hopsital and later honorably discharged. On the back of his card it indicates dicharged from the 20th Maine by order #77 and died May 3, 1913 at Augusta Maine. Rufus received a penion of $12 in 1907 and increased to $17 in 1910 (paid quarterly $36 and $51), death notice received May 10, 1913. Disability was diseased chest as the result of measles.

He was married on March 6, 1868 to my greatgr grandmother and that marriage was ruled illegal (court records) as he was still married and had deserted his prior wife and child without benefit of divorce. He had one child by my grgrandmother and that child took the last name of her mother's first husband who had been killed in the Civil War in 1863.

Rufus was a day laborer.

He married at least four times, in 1864, in March of 1868 when he still resided in Sedgwick and was also of Whiting Maine with wife two and sometime in or after 1875. He was reported missing around March of 1869 with a court action pending and it appears he may have left the state. He was next found living in Richmond, Sagadahoc, Maine with wife four. He had children in the interim but did not marry the last wife until after the death of his prior wife. He had children with wife one and two, and five or more with the last wife, perhaps others.

His last wife was Sarah E. Willett daughter of Ezekiel and Nancy (Cooper) Willett and was born in Gardiner Maine born November 8, 1854. (Edit received indicates he married her in 1904. In the 1900 census both Rufus and Sarah are enumerated as having been married 25 years.) They lived several places in Maine and were living prior in Wiscasset in 1892 (town report) and in Augusta where he and Sarah were living in 1913.

Children in the 1900 census with Rufus and Sarah in Richmond were: Faustina born October 1880, Harry F. born December 1882, Lillian Maude born April 1887, Ida Lavilla or Villa born February 1889, Flora E. born January 1891, and Wallace Chester born July 1894. They also had a daughter no longer in the household in 1900, Daisy M. born in Bath, Maine December 19, 1875. Lillian Maude was born in 1888 in Wiscassett Maine where they resided at that time and daughter Ida was also born there 1892. (Note: his children born in the 1870's through the 1890's were not recorded until the 1930's. These records give Sarah E. Willett as the mother.

The death notice of Rufus gives another son born unknown Edwin living and an adult in 1913.

By 1895 they were in Richmond where a son was born to Rufus and Sarah. This record indicates Sarah was born in Hallowell. A son Lewis E. died at six months of age in 1898 in Richmond.

He died in Augusta from blood poisoning by injesting antiseptic fluid (ruled an accident). He was a resident of Richmond at the time and a mill man. Next of kin was Hughey Page from cemetery record.

Wife Sarah died September 9, 1930 and was buried with Rufus.

Daughter Daisy (Page) Holman died 1951 and was buried in Cotton Cemetery in Richmond.

Note 1: IHugh Page FaG #167651672 memorial is a "burial unknown" so not linked at this time. He should be in the N. Sedgwick cemetery according to his death record and can be linked when his burial location is found and proper memorial made. Please do not send edits to link as burial unknow.

Note2: Per suggestion of FaG Contributor BenG #47255941, Rufus and his twin brother John were born in 1845 not 1844. The hand-written Sedgwick "family record" does indicates the twins were born in 1845. He was age 18 in Jan of 1864 when he enlisted. In the 1870 census he is 26 and the 1900 census states born April 1844. His death record did not give DOB; he died at 69 yrs of age in May of 1913, his birthday having been in April. The cemetery stone and record could be incorrect. To note on birth record of child born 1875 he was recorded as born Ellsworth Maine 1840 and then wife Sarah E. Willett born Gardiner Maine 1876.

Note 3: This memorial is not the same as person of same name Rufus Edwin Page of Jackson Maine. That Rufus was born 1853 son of Albert Page.
