William died near the river just south of South Linevlle, Iowa. He was buried in a pasture in Mercer County,Missouri that was so close to the Iowa-Missouri state line that he thought he was in Iowa. William died in 1841 of typhoid and was buried in a pasture, without a stone. 0ne day,he was returning from a hunting trip, having bagged a large deer when he encountered ten Sac Indians who had bagged nothing. They wanted to barter for the deer. He was wise in the ways of the natives, and being over six feet tall, he wrestled and won a fine new bow and arrow. A second challenge won him the only blanket of a brave. The brave rode off in the snow and below freezing weather. William hurried home with his deer, bow and arrow, and blanket. Thanks to Yancey B.
