Vinus B Nelson, 92, of Cedar Hill, Texas took his last breath just before midnight on Monday, October 23, 2017 with family surrounding him. Although he was the epitome of health, in the end he died from the effects of a severe infection.

Born in Cedar Hill on January 26, 1925 to Vinus B. Nelson and Mary Artemissa Wisdom Nelson. He was proceeded in death by eight siblings and survived by four others, Jettie Vincent, Robert Nelson, Janet Barnhill, and Agnes Nelson. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jean Nelson, his two children, David Nelson and Deborah Nelson Wilkin, five grandsons, two great-grandsons, and many nephews and nieces.

Vinus served honorably on a medical train as a medical assistant in the European Theater of World War 2. If you asked him about his service he would tell you he shot many people during his service, and with a grin he would clarify that he gave many shots as a medic during his service. He also worked for Western Electric for 37 years until he retired in 1983. In 1958 he was set up on a “blind date” with the beautiful Jean Fields which led to their marriage on Valentine’s Day 1959. Vinus was a man who loved life, worked hard to provide for his wife and two children, David and Deborah. Vinus was devoted to God and active all his life at the Cedar Hill Church of Christ, serving as a deacon, leading singing, teaching Bible class, and working with World Bible School.
Vinus was a great father and loved and cared for his family. He left his two children with many wonderful memories of their childhood. He was a loving and devoted father-in-law to Mary Nelson, grandfather to his five grandsons, David Ross (and wife Olivia), Daniel, Jacob, Marcus, and Micah, and two great-grand sons, Caleb and Seth. He was a man who was consistent in his life whether it related to his deep faith, devotion to family, work habits, or friendly spirit. Even in his older age, he kept his youthful look and didn’t diminish in his active lifestyle. His example of faith and life will continue in the hearts and lives of his grateful children, in-laws, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, his many nephews and nieces and many, many others.
Although death brings the pain of separation from those we love, we feel blessed to have had Vinus for 92 years, a man who lived life to the fullest. There is a time to be born and a time to die.
Funeral Service is 2:00 PM Saturday, October 28, 2017 at Jaynes Memorial Chapel, 811 S. Cockrell Hill Road, Duncanville, TX 75137. The family will receive friends at 1 PM Saturday (one hour prior to the service). Burial will follow at Little Bethel Cemetery.
