General Henry H Sibley was the architect of the New Mexico Campaign. Early on the morning of February 21, Sibley began moving his forces northward behind the cover of a large mesa that dominated the terrain east of Fort Craig on the far side of the Rio Grande. By 7:30am, Sibley's lead elements reached the ford but ran into considerable force of Federals guarding the river crossing. Colonel Edward Canby of the Federals had wisely sent scouts out to observe Sibley and they detected the Texans moving towards Valverde. He quickly dispatched a force of 850 men with a battery of artillery to the river crossing. As soon as the Texans approached the river, they were engaged by the Federals. Sibley's men quickly fell back to the cover of a dry riverbed a few hundred yards east of the crossing and the Battle of Valverde began.
Note: Private William Lewis David (older brother to Private John Henry David - also in Sybley's Brigade) could have possibly have died during the Val Verde Battle - or days afterwards in further battles.
