James Jordan "J.J." Brantley was born in Washington County, GA where his family had lived for generations. He married Mary Ann Samantha Lloyd in 1876 in Wilkinson County, GA. They lived in the Wrightsville area until moving to Montgomery County, GA in the late 1890's where they purchased a farm located in an area known as "Stuckey".
The farm came to be known as "Goose Hill" because of the geese that flocked to the pond on the property. It consisted of over 250 acres. It had various livestock and included cotton fields, pecan trees, an apple orchard and more. The farm produced enough for the Brantleys to remain self sufficient and produce an income from their efforts.
When Wheeler County, GA was formed in 1912, J.J. Brantley served as the county's first coroner. A monument naming other founders is located at the Wheeler County Courthouse in Alamo, GA.
J.J. Brantley and his family attended the Stuckey Baptist Church near their farm. Their granddaughter, Virginia Brantley Purdee, recalled riding with them in a covered carriage around 1920.
