On Sunday morning, September 10, 2017, Norma Jean (Williams) McCartney gently went home to be with the Lord.
Jean, age 90, was born on April 9, 1927 in Akron, to William A. Williams and Esther Mae Powell Williams. After graduation from Springfield High School, she began working at Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. where she met the love of her life, Kenneth Wayne McCartney, her husband of 57 years before his death October 14, 2004. Within a few years of their marriage, Jean and Ken were the happy parents of a daughter, Barbara Jean and a son, Douglas Wayne. They devoted their lives to serving the Lord and one another for nearly 6 decades, and for the past 13 years, Jean has carried on alone eagerly anticipating reunion day in eternity.
As a young mother, Jean sang in Mother's Choir, taught Sunday School at Akron Baptist Temple and was involved in many activities that centered on church and home.
Throughout her life, she ministered in song in the church community. An early performance was at age three with her older brother, William A. Williams by her side. As a young girl, she sang with her dad in a local prison ministry. As an adult, she loved singing Southern Gospel music along with Ken and family and friends in duets and trios that were often accompanied by her younger sister Wanda Williams Fowler.
Ken's Firestone career took the couple to Shelby, Ohio, and Cranbury, N.J. and then back to Akron again.
Jean was a talented seamstress and she enjoyed all the domestic arts especially cooking her delicious chocolate pies. Later in life, Jean put her energies into another career working in the county clerk's office in Ravenna, Ohio, and for a decade at Hoover.
Jean was a caring and encouraging mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
Jean is survived by daughter, Barbara J. (McCartney) Salak and her husband, Joe Jr.; son, Douglas W. McCartney and his wife, Gale; grandchildren, Kim and Ronda Warren, Sarah, Brandon (Leigha), and Tyler McCartney; great-granddaughter, Natalie Warren; nieces, nephews, and loving friends.
She will be greatly missed by her family and friends whose lives were greatly enriched by her. Her legacy lives on in us!
