Reverend Ira Robinson, of Asbury United Methodist Church, Lafayette, will conduct the services.
Mrs. Martin was born June 11, 1932 to Seaborn and Maggie Atkins Bennette of Chatham, Louisiana. She was a native of Hodge, La. and was a long-time resident of Lafayette. Virginia graduated from college with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, and had a successful career as a nurse in the medical field. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Lafayette and belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star.
Virginia will be remembered as a loving and caring wife, mother, sister, grandmother, caregiver, and friend. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Virginia is survived by her beloved husband of 52 years, Bobby R. Martin of Lafayette; her two sons Robert A. Martin, and his wife Margaret of Lafayette, and Ray Martin, and his wife Kimberly of New Orleans; her four grandsons Brian and Jon Martin of Lafayette and Ricky and Charlie Martin of New Orleans; her two granddaughters Rachael Martin of Lafayette and Morgan Martin of New Orleans; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents Seaborn Bennette and the former Maggie Atkins of Chatham, LA, and her two sisters Clotiele Abercrombie and Maureen Graham.
The family requests that visiting hours at Fountain Memorial Funeral Home be observed from 11:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Saturday, November 22, 2008, and continue at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 23, 2008 until time of services.
Pallbearers will be Robert Martin, Ray Martin, Brian Martin, Jon Martin, Bob Wells and Dalton Abercrombie, Jr.
A special thank you to the staff of Heart of Hospice, LLC of Scott and personal caretakers Shernika Thomas and Elta Mae Barriere for the compassionate care given to Virginia during her time of illness.
