Tribute to A.C. Attkisson.

Absolen C. Attkisson was born in Adair county, Kentucky, August 14th, 1830, and died at his homo in Walnut, Kansas, October 11th, 1912, aged 82 years, 1 month and 28 days. He was married to Miss Malinda Ann Watson in the year 1850. Six children were born to them. Two died early in years. Those living are: James W. Cherryvale, Robert G. Porterville, Samuel B. Hepler, and Mrs. Mary A. Baer, Buffalo. His first wife died at their home ner Porterville December, 12th, 1884, and was buried in the Independence cemetery. Two years later he was again married to Martha J. White. Two children were born to them, one of them died in infancy, and the one living is Mrs. Nanna McKean, Walnut.

He enlisted in Company C 13th Regiment of Kentucky, volunteer infantry on the 23rd day of September, 1861, and was honorably discharged on account of disabilities on the 6th day of November 1862.

At the age of twenty years he became a Mason, and for sixty-two years was one of its faithful members, attending the lodge meetings and lived and practiced its teachings.

Over fifty years ago he was converted and united with the M. E. church. He was true to the church and died in the living faith of God and has gone to the glory world.

The funeral took place from the M. E. church Sunday afternoon at one o'clock in charge of the Masons. It was a large funeral, many could not gain admittance. On the casket were many beautiful floral offerings. The old flag that he loved so well and under which he marched for over a year in defense of his country had been placed in the casket on his bosom with appropriate service by the ladies of the W. R. C. of Erie. The sermon was preached by Rev. Geo. E. Kitchen, pastor of the M. E. church, and he was buried by the side of his first wife in the Independence cemetery. Six of his old comrades, J. P. Morgan, John Balla, D. B. Gregory, Frank Swinger, A. S. Wright and J. F. Miller acted as pall bearers.

At the open grave stood an old colored lady, Mrs. J. Y. Blackmore of Cherryvale. During the days of slavery she was a slave in the Attkisson family in Kentucky. She had not forgotten the kind christian treatment she had received at their hands, and had come to attend his funeral. She stood at the open grave and as the casket was lowered to its last resting place she mingled her tears with their tears. It was a very touching scene.

In all of his afflictions he was patient and kind to those about him. He had the best of care and died in peace. Peace to his memory.
