Judith Nancy Hamaker died quietly in hospice care at her Willow Lake Place home on April 14, 2017. A lifelong resident of Indianapolis, she was born to Joseph Eugene Hamaker and Lillian Berner Hamaker on June 28, 1937. She graduated from Tudor Hall School in 1955, attended Stephens College, received an Associate of Arts degree from Colorado Women's College, and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Arizona in 1959. She was an accomplished painter and sculptor and pursued these interests throughout her life.
She loved to swim and waterski and spent many happy summers at the family cottage on Lake Wawasee. Back in Indianapolis, she swam several times a week at the Indianapolis Athletic Club, where she was a long time member of the Dolphins.
Judith decided to pursue a career in law and graduated from the Indiana University School of Law with a degree of Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1966. She worked at Legal Services Organization, the U.S. District Attorney's office and spent the last 23 years of her career at the Social Securities Office of Hearings and Appeals until she retired in 2011.
She loved music and the Arts and was a faithful supporter of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Indiana Reparatory Theater, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Dance Kaleidoscope and many others including the music programs at Christ Church Cathedral, where she was a long-time member. She especially loved the Indianapolis Children's Museum. She joined the Guild in 1961 and volunteered there in many capacities over the years. Among the many things she did, she found that tutoring IPS students to be one of the most satisfying.
Judith was a world traveler, visiting most of Eastern and Western Europe, Asia and North Africa. She loved the museums and cathedrals everywhere she went, as well as elephant rides in India, camel rides in Egypt and the fulfillment of a life-long dream—a balloon ride over Cappadocia in Turkey, one of her favorite countries.
She is survived by her brother James Hamaker, M.D. and her niece Catherine Hamaker, and the many people whose lives she touched over the years.
She was a great animal lover, especially cats, and the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Indianapolis Humane Society, 7929 n. Michigan Rd, 46268.
Calling will be Friday, April 21, from 4-6 PM at the Crown Hill Funeral Home, 700 w. 38th Street, 46208, followed by a private commitment.
