Joseph Layne Black (Colonel, US Army retired), 87, of Sierra Vista, Arizona, passed away at home on Tuesday, October 17, 2017.

He was born in St. Johns, Arizona, on Sunday, December 15, 1929, to Joseph and Margaret (Jarvis) Black and was known his whole life as Layne Black to his family and friends.

He graduated from North High School in Phoenix. He then went on to Phoenix College and proudly served an honorable church mission to Tonga. After his mission he then completed a degree in civil engineering from BYU. Joe worked as a civil engineer, first for McDonnell Douglas and then Bechtel Corp. for over 30 years in Los Angeles, California; Phoenix, Arizona; and Ankara, Turkey before settling in Sierra Vista. He married the love of his life in 1954.

Joe has touched many lives through his life-long service to others and his testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He has always been an avid gardener, and in his retirement has also been a volunteer for VICAP and AZ State Dept. of Corrections as an assistant chaplain.

Joe is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Karen Dunn Black; sons, J. Kevin, Wyatt, and Daniel Black; daughters, Julia Black and Eileen Black-Rodriguez; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, LaDawn Powell, Sheila Bond, and Janette Kasl.

Joe was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Kelly Black.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, October 30, 2017, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Center, 2100 E Yaqui St, Sierra Vista, AZ. Viewing will also be at the church on Monday 9:30-10:30 AM. Interment to follow with full military honors at Southern Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1300 S Buffalo Soldier Trail, Sierra Vista.

The family would like to thank all the people who have helped in the past six months and Casa De La Paz Hospice, whose assistance has been invaluable in the past few weeks of Joe's life.
