Pioneer African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church Bishop. A leader in the Underground Railroad prior to and during the American Civil War, he helped to establish a number of churches and schools, including the Payne Institute which later became Allen University in Columbia, South Carolina and Paul Quinn College in Waco, Texas. He was also an early principal of Union Seminary in Wilberforce, Ohio which later became Wilberforce University. He died at the age of 75. Originally interred at Graceland Cemetery in Washington DC, his remains were transferred to Woodlawn Cemetery after Graceland was closed by an Act of Congress in 1894.
