Cheryl Lynn Bowne-Pickering of Claremont, NH was welcomed into the loving arms of her Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ, on October 17, 2017. Though she several times said she “wasn’t quite ready to meet Him”, she knew that He was in control of that and not her. She had suffered many setbacks to her health since being admitted to Valley Regional Hospital on September 5, 2017. She was born on April 22, 1957 at New London Hospital in New London, NH and was 60 years young. She graduated from Kearsarge Regional in 1975.

Cheryl loved creating things from cloth and her sewing machine. She was extremely talented at that, and shared her love for children by crafting body puppets, costumes such as apples and pumpkins for Wellwood Orchards, upholstering for family and friends and occasionally hiring out for clothing repairs. For a time during the 90’s she owned and operated “Specialty Stitches” from her home on Chestnut Street. That endeavor saw her making medieval costumes for individuals enjoying that sort of thing, as well as the various things mentioned above. She was able to design and create from start to finish almost anything a person could describe.

She worked in Human Services for Sullivan County Rehabilitation Services, and had a unique manner of reaching some folks with special needs who frightened other staff. She also worked at Ellen’s Interiors as a seamstress, as a cashier at Texaco in Claremont, and as Office Manager at Don Bowne Construction in Concord, NH.

Coming to know Jesus as her Lord in October of 2000, she attended several churches in the area. Most recently at Freedom in Christ in Ascutney, VT., she had developed a love for Bible studies outside the church as well, attending as often as health permitted. She showed a true grasp of what a “genuine” Christian is, revealed in a letter to her church friends after her initial diagnosis of pneumonia and lung cancer. She was soft spoken, caring and mindful of others, reaching out to hurting friends and strangers through her handmade cards, for example.

Cheryl is survived by her husband of 17 years, (and friend and companion of many more) Michael Pickering, her sister Barbara Bowne, also of Claremont. She has a brother, Don Bowne, her nephew DJ of CT, and his mom, Susie Bowne of Gilmanton Iron Works. Michael’s siblings, Elizabeth and her husband Gordon of Wilbraham, MA, Steve Pickering of Claremont, Marianne of Freetown, MA and Phil and his wife, Sharon of New Bedford, MA. Cheryl is also survived by many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, on Mike’s side of the family. Friends who knew her well would say her most avid admirer, (and the feeling was mutual), was her constant canine companion, Dino.

She was predeceased by her dad, Everett Francis Bowne, and her mom, Shirley (Worth) Bowne. At Cheryl’s request, there will be no calling hours.
