"James was born at Candren Farm, Paisley, Scotland and came with his parents, Abram & Jean Thomson Rowand, and his siblings, Jennie and Andrew, from Scotland in 1832. They settled in Little York, now the city of Toronto, where they lived for eight years. Three more children were born there, but only Abram survived childhood.
In the fall of 1840, they moved to Peel County, settling on the First Line East, Chinguacousy Township. Two more children were born, William survived childhood and Robert died in infancy. Mrs Rowand died when Robert was born and is buried in Bayfied Cemetery, Chinguacousy Township. The rest of the Rowand Family came to Brant Township, Bruce County in 1851 and 1852 but James and his cousin, John Wallace, floated down the Saugeen River with the Gowanlocks in 1851 and James married Elizabeth [Oliver "Betty"] Gowanlock in early 1855 [June 30, 1855].
James settled Lots 18 R.W.S.R. Saugeen and Lot 34, Conc A, Elderslie Township, on December 6, 1852. The first cabin was built very near the river but spring flooding soon proved the location unsuitable and a second house, this time of frame construction was built on level ground. this was situated just across the lane from the present house. The present beautiful brick home was built in 1890. It is told that Mrs Rowand always had a maid.
James Rowand was a Member of Parliament for West Bruce, under the Liberal banner in the 1890s."
