Dorothy Marie was born Dec. 10, 1931, daughter of Floyd and Frances (Ferguson) Hooton in Stafford County. She attended rural schools until moving to Jewell County where she graduated from Esbon Rural High School in 1950. She attended Fort Hays State College.She married Leo Lake in Esbon, Kansas, August 26, 1950. Over the years they lived in several Kansas cities, including Hill City, Great Bend, Manhattan, Russell, Hoxie and Abilene. After living in Abilene for many years, she moved to Salina in 1999. In 2014, she and Leo moved to the Salina Presbyterian Manor.Dorothy (also known by her immediate family as Susie) worked in various jobs through the years including being a telephone operator, secretary as well as roles in banking and insurance. She eventually discovered her talent in golfing and spent many years playing with friends and family on courses in Abilene and Salina. She served as Treasurer of the Municipal Ladies Golf Association as a way to give back to the sport. Quilting and sewing was her hobby at home and she spent countless hours creating quilts for family members that they continue to cherish today.Far more treasured and admired than her creative and athletic talents, however, was her love for her family. She was never happier than when surrounded by her husband of 67 years, her children and grandchildren.Dorothy was a member of the Salina Trinity United Methodist Church and the Salina Area Retired School Personnel. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Ralph and Harold Lee. Surviving are her husband, Leo of Salina, children Randy and wife Susan of Wagner, South Dakota, Rod and wife Charlene of Dallas, Texas and, Jodi Walters and husband David of Abilene, Kansas; five grandchildren, Jennifer Lockhart and husband Phil, Jordan Lake, Hannah Garrison and husband Alex, Allie Walters and Jaden Walters, one great grandson, Dayton Nelson as well as two nieces, two nephews, cousins and a multitude of friends.The family thanks the caregivers at Presbyterian Manor and Salina Regional Hospital for their loving care during her final illness.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Salina Trinity United Methodist Church, in care of Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, 414 NW Thirds St., Abilene, Kansas. Online condolences may be sent to www.martinbeckercarlson.com. The family will greet friends from 6:00 – 7:00 Thursday, October 19 at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral home. Burial will be held at the Abilene Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 20.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:30 pm, Oct. 20, 2017 at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Salina, Kansas with the Rev. Barry Dundas presiding.
