Alma Bartel was born to Henry and Susanna (Hiebert) Wiebe on February 2, 1931, at Randolph, Manitoba. She peacefully slipped away, with family at her bedside, on Monday, March 7, 2016, at Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach, Manitoba. She reached the age of 85 years.
Mom grew up in a large family. Her parents owned the local country store. As a teenager Mom commuted to Winnipeg to work, together with her older sister.

On March 10, 1949, she was joined in marriage to Paul Bartel of Kleefeld, Manitoba. They shared their lives together for 53 years, till Dad passed away in 2002. They were blessed with three sons and four daughters. She carried on bravely after his passing, keeping herself busy with living for the rest of us.

On June 3, 1956, she was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, at Kleefeld, Manitoba, by Minister John I. Penner. She embraced the faith to the end, leaving us a quiet example of peace and trust in God.

After living on the farm at Kleefeld for 36 years, Dad and Mom moved to Tatamagouche in 1985. They met the challenges of starting up in a new place with enthusiasm. Her meticulous ways kept her surroundings in perfect order. Mom was a 'helping' person. She worked tirelessly to help people in need, as well as making sure the family came first. Her grandchildren have many happy memories of reading, playing games, and just being together. She was always interested in the details of the grandchildren's lives, and prayed much for her loved ones. When living alone got too much for her, a granny suite was attached to Mylah and Bruce's house for her. She enjoyed her new home and being part of our family for a short year and a half. The last few months she lived with Sandy and Reuben at Kleefeld, MB. Her last seven weeks in the hospital, as we sat with her and cared for her, are a special memory to us. Even there we could draw from the quiet strength that God blessed her with.

Left to cherish precious memories are her children: Eugene and wife Pat, Morinville, Alberta; Lester and wife Penny, Kleefeld, Manitoba, Cassandra and husband Reuben Schellenberg, Kleefeld, Manitoba; Garth and wife Agnes, Grunthal, Manitoba; Sheila and husband Franklin Isaac, Tatamagouche, Novat Scotia, Mylah and husband Bruce Isaac, Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia; brothers and sisters : Dorothy and husband Wilmer Fast, sister-in-law Eleanor, Bill and wife Irene, Hilda and husband Cornie Kroeker, Helen Penner, Henry and wife Elfrieda, Bernie and wife Loreena, Peter and wife Alvina, Jake and wife Margaret, Raymond and wife Margaret; one sister-in law, Martha, Mrs. Herb Barkman, one brother-in-law, Edwin Bartel; 19 grandchildren, and 33 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, parents-in-law, husband, one infant daughter, one sister, one brother, and one brother-in-law.

We as a family want to extend our deep appreciation to the caring, supportive staff at Bethesda Hospital. Your compassion meant a lot to us all.
