Marilyn Joan Mertens, 77, formerly of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, died October 7, 2017, in Bellevue, Washington. She was born January 10, 1940, to John and Blanche (Anderson) Schlaphoff, in Lincoln, Nebraska. She graduated from Westmar College, and received her Masters
and Doctorate in Political Science from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. On June 26, 1971, she married Ronald Mertens. She taught political science and administration at the University of Nebraska (Lincoln and Omaha), Nebraska Wesleyan University, and Midwestern State University; and owned gourmet kitchen shops in New Orleans. She was an Episcopalian.

Survivors include husband Ronald; children Craig and Rebecca Mertens (Dallas, Texas), and Kathryn and Anthony Charlton (Bellevue,Washington); grandchildren Penelope and Quentin Charlton, and Neal Mertens; brother and sister-in-law Paul and Irene Schlaphoff (Sherburn, Minnesota); nephew Aaron Schlaphoff and Paul Krieger (New York City, New York), and Mary Schlaphoff (Minneapolis, Minnesota). She was preceded in death by niece Paula Schlaphoff. Memorials to be
made to the American Cancer Society. The family shall hold a private service following cremation.
