From The Saline County Democrat, March 29, 1916, transcribed by Linda Berney:

A Well Lived Life Ended -

Mrs. Rebecca C. Thompson passed from this life Friday March 17th. She fell asleep after an illness of a couple of weeks which at first did not appear to be serious. Not until Tuesday noon was there any need of anxiety for her condition. In the morning she had taken a little nourishment and appeared to be about as usual, seemingly having only a bad case of grippe, but at noon she sank into a coma from which she never revived. Physicians were called from DeWitt and Lincoln but it was beyond the power of man to aid.

The funeral was held from the M. E. church, which was filled with friends from the community and surrounding towns who knew that a friend had gone. The remains were laid to rest in the Swanton cemetery.

Rebecca C. Corfield was born April 16, 1850 in Schropschier, England, she being one of ten children born to John and Elizabeth Corfield.

Upon coming to America she went direct to Galesburg, Ills. where Benjamin Thompson was waiting and they were married March 12, 1871.

In 1872 they came to this county, hoping to make for themselves a home on the then government land. They settled on a homestead three and a half miles from where Swanton now is, where they lived for 25 years. They then moved to Swanton where they have since lived.

She was identified with the Methodist church at Swanton and was very active in the Sunday school and other activities of the church and will be greatly missed everywhere.

She leaves to mourn her departure a husband; two daughters, Mrs. Ada Beckman and Mrs. Eva McEntaffer, both living near Swanton. Two sisters, Hattie and Anna, both in England. Four brothers, Chas. of Ogallala, Nebr., Edwin of Cedar Bluffs, Kans., Thomas and William, both in England, and a host of friends.
