Hazel Beatrice KEMP married Francis Chattan STEPHENS in 1912. He was the son of a wealthy Montreal merchant. The couple settled in Montreal. They had two children, Frances Elizabeth (1912) and John Harrison (1913). Francis was a stockbroker at the Montreal Stock Exchange, and also a reservist in the 5th Royal Highlanders (Black Watch). He enlisted at the outbreak of World War I in 1914. In 1915, Hazel left with her daughter to join her husband, who had been wounded on a battlefield. Her mother-in-law, who had custody of her son, decided to surprise them and embarked aboard the Lusitania. On 7 May the ship was torpedoed by a German submarine, resulting in the tragic death of the occupants. Hazel and Francis repatriated to Canada, but Francis died of the Spanish flu in 1918, 10 days before his 31st birthday.

In January 1920, Hazel married Arthur Boucher COLVILLE. He had made his fortune working for the Sun Life Insuarnce Company.
