Bennington Journal- One of the saddest affairs that ever happened in this community and one that has cast a gloom over the entire community was the killing of Mr. Will Barker by Mr. Bus(h) Rich, south of town in the Manning community, Tuesday morning between 10 and 11 o’clock. Mr. Barker had gone to the home of a neighbor to return a hay rake and was returning home when he and Mr. Rich met.

About two months ago these parties engaged in a fight here on the streets of Bennington and in the afternoon fired several shots at each other out south of town on their way home. (Another article said they first argued over a hog.)

Immediately after the killing Tuesday morning Mr. Rich started to town to surrender and did surrender to Marshal Etchison, who was on his way out there.

Further than saying that he shot Mr. Barker, Mr. Rich would make no statement. There was no eye witness to the shooting.

The body of Mr. Barker was laid to rest in the Bennington cemetery yesterday afternoon where a large concours of friends had met to pay their last respects; estimates of the number present being from 600 to 1,000. The Masonic Lodge of this place, of which he was a faithful member, having charge of the services.
