He is survived by the love of his life of 30 years, Kay; his children, son, James Lopez Jr and wife, Kay Tarver Lopez of Burleson TX, daughter, Gina Lopez of Austin, TX, son, Sam Lopez and wife ,Jamie of Richmond, TX, step-daughter, Cherie Strickland of Little River-Academy and daughter of mutual love Lisa Fazekas and husband, Al of Pearland, TX; eight precious grandchildren; thirteen amazing great- grandchildren; sisters, Ida Rios and her husband, Greg of Sugar Land, TX, and Rita Girdy and her husband, Pete of Victoria, TX; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

He and Kay retired in 2008 and he built the home he had always wanted for her at Lake Whitney where they were surrounded by the best of friends.
His passion was fishing, and he was on the water every chance he could be. He always said "I can put you on the fish, but I can't make them bite". He also loved woodwork, most recently making beautiful crosses , frames, lures, and wishing wells.
Good times followed anywhere James went. People wanted to be near him, to laugh and have fun, to learn what he could teach them, to be respected and welcomed into the fold, sometimes to be teased, but always to be loved. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his name to St. Judes Children Cancer Research.
