Her first marriage was to actor and film director, John Marcellus Huston, on 16 October 1926 in Los Angeles County, California. They separated in August 1933. On 07 December 1940, she married George Hill Hodel in Sonora, Mexico. Together they had four sons. Dorothy and George separated in 1944, and divorced in 1945. George Hodel left Los Angeles in March 1950, relocated to Hawaii, and subsequently remarried. She occasionally wrote scripts (sometimes uncredited) for radio, and motion pictures.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her infant son, John Dion Hodel and brother, Charles Eugene Harvey, Jr.
Dorothy was a loving and devoted mother to her children.
