Otto August Bodenhausen, a teacher, coach and administrator in the Topeka school system for 30 years, died Sunday, May 9, 2004, at the age of 84, at Midland Hospice House. He had served as a principal at Sumner Elementary School, as teacher and coach at the former Crane Junior High School and at Topeka High School as dean of boys and also taught history. He then was principal at East Topeka Junior High School and the principal who opened French Middle School. He served a term as president of the Kansas State High School Principals Association. Mr. Bodenhausen closed out his career in education as coordinator of student services at Kaw Area Technical School, retiring in 1982. As football coach at Topeka High School, in an era before a state championship playoff system was inaugurated, his 1955 team posted a perfect season and was proclaimed to be state champions.

Mr. Bodenhausen was active in community affairs. He was a member of Lowman United Methodist Church and later Grace Episcopal Cathedral, where he served on the Vestry and various committees. He also was a member of the Downtown Optimist Club, Washburn Walkers, the Senior Council of the Greater Topeka Area Chamber of Commerce and the Topeka Area Retired Teacher's Association.

He was born March 18, 1920, in Saint Joseph, Missouri, to Otto A. and Elsa A. Wagenknecht Bodenhausen. He graduated from Lafayette High School in Saint Joseph and earned A.B. and M.A. degrees from the University of Northern Colorado, where he played both football and basketball before being mobilized in World War II. Mr. Bodenhausen rose to the rank of captain during his period of service and was wounded during fighting in Germany, earning Purple Heart and Bronze Star awards.

He married Catherine Riesenmey in 1942. She died in 1976. In 1977, he married Dorothy Huseman Miller. She survives. Mr. Bodenhausen also is survived by daughters, Judith Bodenhausen Brooks, Oakland, California, and Carol Bodenhausen, Gallup, New Mexico; a sister, Anne Byrd, Murfeesboro, Tennessee; stepsons, Randall Miller, Hutchinson, Kansas and Gregory Miller, Lawrence, Kansas; and a stepdaughter, Sandra Scalia, Burnsville, Minnesota. He also is survived by two grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

His body is to be cremated. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Grace Episcopal Cathedral, 701 S.W. 8th. There will be a private family service for interment of his ashes at Mount Hope Cemetery.
