Born in 1925 in Pawtucket, RI, she was the daughter of the late Harold & Helen (O’Brien) Card.
Helen married her best friend, Edgar Adams and raised their family of six children in Warwick. She was blessed to meet her 2nd husband Richard Bates, to whom she was married for 10 years.
Helen and her husband Ed, dedicated much of their time as foster parents, opening their home to approximately 100 foster children over 35 years. In 1990, they were honored for their efforts, receiving the prestigious Jefferson Award. Helen and Ed also volunteered together at Rhode Hospital from 1982 – 1991, working mostly in the ambulatory-patient center.
She was also a World War II Navy veteran and served in the medical core. Helen recalled fondly, that a friend serving with her once said “Helen, you are a Card, that would never be lost in the Deck”.
Helen was a member of the Pilgrim Senior Center and enjoyed her many friends there and the activities they all shared, especially bingo.
Helen had an unwavering faith in God and it was her strong desire that her family and friends would seek the truth and accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. So much so, that at Christmas she gave out the book “The Case for Christ” to family members and friends.
She is survived by her children; Robert (Sue) Adams of Swansea, MA, David (Barbara) Adams of West Warwick, Richard (Diane) Adams of North Kingstown, Gail Adams, Joyce (Rick) Andrade and Russell (MaryEllen) Adams, all of Warwick, RI. She also leaves, 19 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. She was the stepmother of the late Richard Bates Jr. She was the sister of Audrey Barrowclough, Marilyn Fisher and the late Harold, Robert and Ronald Card.
Join her family as they honor Helen for a “fight well fought; a race well run; a faith well-kept and a crown well won”.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday at 8:30 am with a service to follow at 10:15 am in the Russell J. Boyle and Son Funeral Home, 142 Centerville Rd, Warwick. Burial with military honors in the RI Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter.
