TSgt Edward J. Bislew Was reported as Missing In Action on December 29, 1943. He was legally declared dead on February 4, 1946.
TSgt Bislew was the Engineer of the Ivan M. Osborne crew on B-24J-1-CO "Baby Sandy 2" Serial Number 42-73013 in the 431st Bomber Squadron, 11th Bombardment Group (Heavy). On December 29, 1943 Baby Sandy 2 took off from Tarawa Airfield (Hawkins) piloted by 1st Lt. Ivan M. Osborne on a bombing mission against Taroa Airfield. The weather was good. After releasing their bombs, the formation was attacked by over thirty A6M Zeros. The B-24 was heavily damaged, began loosing altitude, broke away from the formation and began flying towards Majuro Atoll in the Marshall Islands. Arriving there the B-24 made a perfect water landing onto the west reef between Majuro Island and Ajola Island at 12:01 pm. The pilot and co-pilot were killed in the crash. The remaining crew members were captured the following day. It is reported that they were taken to Maloelap, then to Kwajalein. Evidence surfaced during war crimes trials indicating they were executed on Kwajalein just prior to the Allied invasion of that island. They remained MIA on record until declared dead on 4 February 1946.
