He married Susannah Creiner August 10, 1848, and fathered Almira (b. @1851), John H. (07/24/55), Ellen C. (b. 02/28/58, d. 03/02/60), Anna Eliza (b. 01/07/70, d. 01/17/70), and Alice E. (b @1869), In 1860, he was a laborer presumably living in Latimore Township, Adams County, and stood 5' 8" tall with black hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Adams County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 10 as a private with Co. I, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), but due to illness was absent at muster-out, the discharge date in his case not yet found. The rest of the company discharged July 28, 1863, in Gettysburg.
