Agnes M. Alston Cuffee, 84, the daughter of Minnie Jordan Alston and Edward Alston, quietly rejoined her husband of 61 years, Samuel A. Cuffee Sr., who preceded her to "Glory." Mrs. Cuffee, a resident of the 7000 block of Auburn Ave., passed away March 5, 2007, in a local nursing home. Agnes waged a concerted effort to overcome the ravages of illnesses that affect the elderly. Her pride and demeanor would not let her succumb to any other measures other than the will of the Lord. Agnes was a 1940 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, Norfolk, and in addition, she received numerous credits while attending the Norfolk Division of Virginia State College. Agnes was a "prolific perfectionist" and she achieved the highest levels of authority in both the Eastern Star and the Daughters of the Elks. Agnes was also a lifelong member of Grace Episcopal Church, Norfolk, and she served diligently on the Altar Guild. Agnes is survived by her only offspring, Samuel A. Cuffee Jr. and his wife Kathie of Virginia Beach; her devoted sister, Marie Alston Sims and her nephews, Steven and Edward of Greensboro, N.C.; her cherished grandchildren, Michael A. Cuffee and wife Tonya of Bristow, Va., David C. Cuffee of Norfolk, Deborah Cuffee Payton of Chesapeake and Lisa Cuffee Ellick and her husband Andre of Chesapeake; and 11 great-grandchildren. Agnes also wanted to acknowledge the never-ending support and love of her cousins, James and Bonnie Simons of Omaha, Neb., the Jordan family, the attention that was given by Joseph and Myra Sawyer and godbrother, Bernard W. Simons Jr. Through time, we will gradually absorb the loss of this "Wonderful Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Cousins and Confidant." Each of us will have to reflect back and ask ourselves just how she "impacted" our lives. She will never be forgotten and our memories of her will last forever! A funeral will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, Brambleton Avenue, Norfolk, at 1 p.m. Wednesday with Father Harold Cobb officiating. Interment will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. There will be a wake service Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Graves Funeral Home.
