Robert R. "Benny" Alderfer, age 88, a lifelong resident of Harleysville, died peacefully Friday, June 5 at Peter Becker Community with his wife and daughter by his side. He was the husband of Regina (Wambold) Alderfer. Born in Harleysville, he was the son of the late Robert Y. and Hilda B. (Ritter) Alderfer.

Benny graduated from Souderton High School, class of 1944. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Until his retirement in 1991, Mr. Alderfer owned and operated Alderfer Transportation Co. of Harleysville. The company, begun by his father in 1932, was responsible for transporting thousands of area school students safely over many years.

Benny and Regina spent countless hours volunteering time in their community. He was a longtime member of Christ Covenant Church in Harleysville, a member of Harleysville Community Center, a Life Member of Harleysville Lions Club since 1954, and a Life Member of Harleysville Fire Co since 1948, as well as past President and Fire Chief. He also volunteered his time in support of his children's activities as a Little League coach, Assistant Scoutmaster, Band Booster, and dedicated sports fan. He was a Habitat for Humanity volunteer for 14 years and a recipient with his wife of the first Harleysville Senior Center's Pillars of the Community Award in 2005.

In addition to his wife of 64 years, he was survived by children: R. Bradley of Manchester, NH, Robin Halpern and husband Michael of Collingswood, NJ, April Pennisi and husband Gene of Raleigh NC; grandchildren: Joseph Halpern, Kevin Alderfer and wife Jill, Jason Halpern, Shannon (Alderfer) Hokula and husband Thaddeus, Justin Halpern, Maggie Pennisi, and Jacob Pennisi; great-grandchildren: Noah and Emelynne Alderfer; siblings: Grace Landis, Larry Alderfer and wife Patti, Brenda Bonheim and husband Bob, and Brian Alderfer and wife Sherri. He was preceded in death by sister Janice Joss.

His Memorial Service was held on Sat., June 13, 2015 at Christ Covenant Church, Harleysville, PA.
