Nannie Woodruff Rives quotes from a family book, History of the Bozeman Family, by Rev. Joseph Woodruff Bozeman; "The Woodruff family of Spartanburg, S.C., possessed marked traits of character. They were staunch Baptist, two of them useful preachers - Dick Woodruff of South Carolina, and Nathaniel E. Woodruff who left for Alabama." Nathaniel was the son of Josiah Woodruff born 1774, and Margaret McCravy Woodruff, 1783-1851, who were the parents of Oliver Hazard Perry Woodruff, 1818- 1861, who in 1846 married Pamelia Sanders Moor, 1829-1861.

Nanie Woodruff Rives traveled to Winston County, Miss., where Josiah Woodruff settled with his large family eight miles south of Louisville in 1838 after leaving Lowndes County, Ala. He moved his letter from New Bethel Baptist Church, Braggs, Ala., to his church in Louisville, Miss. His sons Daniel Pinckney Woodruff and Oliver Hazard Perry I stayed in Lowndes County. Nathaniel E. Woodruff followed his family to Mississippi, but divided his time preaching in Mississippi and Alabama. He was ordained on 16 June 1845 at New Bethel Baptist Church, Brags, Ala, where he is buried.
