The following is a letter written to Ruth Cartwright by Mrs. Harry Leonard Talbott, whose husband is the grandson of Thomas and Clara: P. O. Box 274 West Baden, Indiana 47469

July 29, 1970
Dear Mrs. Cartwright: Deliliah Brown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Tolbert, gave me your address. She said you were interested in the Tolbert ancestry and she knew I was in the process of tracing the Tolbert tree also. I was prepared to fill you in on Thomas Tolbert's family, but apparently you have more of the history than I. My husband, Harry, is a son of Everett Tolbert (deceased). Everett was a son of Thomas Tolbert. We were unaware that there were children by either of Tom's first two wives. In fact, it was by sheer accident that I learned of his first marriage to Margaret Childers which ended, I believe, in divorce. I feel sure that Harry's father, nor none of his brothers or sisters, knew there were children by the other wives. I have the pension records from Washington. These contain copies (or duplicates I should say) of the three marriages. No record is made of the divorce or deaths of the first two wives. But I did learn he was married in Lawrence Co. to Margaret Childers on May 29, 1863, under the name of Thomas Talbott. (The name change to Tolbert occurred in an army mix-up). On May 4, 1873 Thomas Tolbert married Parthena Kirk in Orange Co. I am told she is buried at Bonds Chapel beside Thomas but there is no marker for her or for his third wife who is also buried near him. The records state only that she died "about 1881"...Thomas Tolbert, son of Hanson and Mary Allegree Talbott, was born in Orange Co., Ind. Jan. 30, 1840 and died Jan 3, 1916, also in Orange Co. He lived in Lawrence Co. when he enrolled in the Union Army during the Civil War. He and his brother, Shadrach Tolbert, and John Childers were enrolled at Cincinnati, Ohio as privates in Co. M, 5th Ohio Cavalry Volunteers, on Aug. 23, 1864. Thomas was discharged on June 26, 1865 at Raleigh, N.C. He was awarded an invalid pension on 19 June 1885. This was in the fabulous sum of $4.00 per month. His army papers describe Tom as being 5ft 8 1/2 in. tall, dark complexion, dark hair, grey eyes; a farmer by occupation.

Sincerely,

Cledith Tolbert, (Mrs. Harry Tolbert)
