He grew up on his family's farm in Fenton. His family moved to Detroit during World War II, and Bernard graduated from the Henry Ford Trade School in Dearborn. He married Sylvia Jeanette Becker on August 17, 1951. Bernard attended the Detroit Bible College, and later graduated from the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. Bernard and Sylvia served as missionaries with The American Mission for Opening Closed Churches, where he was appointed Director of Christian Education. In 1958, the family moved back to Fenton, and Bernard served as Assistant Pastor of the Covenant Community Church in Linden. After working in various professional capacities, he was appointed Administrator of Kelsey Memorial Hospital in Lakeview in 1966. He and Sylvia raised their sons in Lakeview and were very active in the community. Bernard eventually accepted the position of Director of Purchasing at Central Michigan Hospital in Mt. Pleasant, and later as Director of Materials Management for the ServiceMASTER Company in several hospitals in Indiana and Ohio. In 1993 he retired for ServiceMASTER, and he and Sylvia moved back to Michigan, purchasing their home on Lake Stanton. He was an active member of Nevins Lake Church, serving in various capacities. During this journey, Bernard and Sylvia traveled many miles and shared many joys and blessings, the greatest of which was the joy of serving The Lord and trusting in His love and grace.
Bernard is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Sylvia; sons, Jerry (Dorinda) Kirshman of Lakeview and Randall (Tammy) Kirshman of Greenville; grandchildren, Jason (Rosie Vizineua) Kirshman of Six Lakes, Kris Kirshman of Lakeview, Mindy (Brian) Train of Greenville, and Joshua (Erica) Kirshman of Coloma; great-grandchildren, Abagail, Payton, Cooper, Jasmine, Jessa, and Jaden; sister, Barbara (Harold) Sloan of Fenton; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Eleanor, Marian, and Howard.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at Hurst Funeral Home, Greenville, with visitation from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm prior to the funeral. Bernard's pastor, Rev. Dennis Ross, will serve as officiant. A luncheon will follow at Nevins Lake Church. Private interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Nevins Lake Church.
